Newcastle’s Sven Botman may face long injury lay-off, Eddie Howe admits

Dutch defender has not featured since knee injury last monthAnthony Gordon or Joelinton could start up front in Carabao CupNewcastle will be without Sven Botman in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie at Manchester United and Eddie Howe has acknowledged he could be without his £35m Netherlands defender for some time.Botman has not played since sustaining a knee injury in September’s 8-0 win at Sheffield United and Newcastle’s manager did not reject suggestions that the centre half may be sidelined long term. “Yeah, perhaps,” said Howe. “There’s an issue there and we’re working through various options to try to diagnose the exact problem. We’re still waiting for clarity on what is happening with Sven.”
